The final year of The Woods begins here, as our crew comes to terms with the fallout from the destruction of Bay Point.

The Woods #25 eBook James Tynion IV Michael Dialynas

James Tynion's comic is marked as a Stephen King-esque teenage horror and while there is some violence here, it is far more angsty and weird than scary. The dynamics are high school dynamics in a perilous and surreal forest situation--A Wisconsin High School is transported without a clear reason to a planet in the woods--and the writing sticks to tropes that one will probably recognize clearly. At points, it reads like a blender of surreal pop culture premises with a bit more violence than one expects at first since it involves teens. The problem is that author seems to be writing a book aimed at Young Adults explicitly while playing with themes that would be better served by a mature set of characters and characters that were more than teen movie/fiction tropes. The art is enjoyable, particularly the color work, and there is room for the series to improve, so I would give it a chance.

The Woods #25 eBook James Tynion IV Michael Dialynas Reviews

The artwork is pretty good, nice detail and coloring, but I prefer more realistic rendering myself. The story has a good arc, but seems to jump around quite a bit and is therefore a little hard to get your head around. All in all, pretty good.
The premise is nice but most of the drama is pretty "surface level" stuff that's been done before better. The age demographic for this skews pretty young for what could otherwise be pretty cool. I won't continue reading this series and if anyone asked to borrow my copy, I wouldn't really mind if it never came back.
not as much QS as I was led to believe.
I picked this up and couldn't put it down and now I want the next one! The characters look a bit off-putting in some frames, but mostly the art is pretty good. The characters are likeable and the interpersonal drama is totally believable, and like I said, the plot is compelling.
I've read The Drifting Classroom, which is almost an identical plot basis as this series, but I'm not going to judge this as a knock off of it. There's different ways to tell a story, and this plot is one that's caught my interest before, so why not give it a shot again? I feel it has potential to be just as good, or honestly better than, The Drifting Classroom, which it's already surpassed in art quality.

Sure, there are character cliches, but it's characters are high school based, and those stereotypes are in literally every high school in existence. Give it some time for character development. In just the first four chapters, there isn't much character growth, I'll admit, which is a bit disappointing, but there is enough addition to the plot for the mystery of what's happening to grow, and that's enough to get me to wait for volume two.
The Woods is a different kind if story. Part alien abduction, part Lord of the Flies, part high school melodrama. It is excellent storytelling with a unique concept.
Woods, Vol. 1 by James Tynion IV begins with an ordinary school day; it introduces the students, the teachers, and the school. Then the school is transported, students and all, to an alien moon. There are creatures, some of which are violent, and signs of intelligent and hyper-intelligent life. Within the school, there is a power struggle between the coach – a former special forces operative – the principal, and the student government.

This is an excellent title. The characters and the situation are well defined. There are leaders, there are followers, and there are rebels. The alien lifeforms are scary, and this is a frightening comic; I really got into it even though I started reading it before six in the morning (insomnia). It does remind me heavily of The Walking Dead with a mix of Predators, but there's enough new about this collection to make it a worthwhile read. ****1/2
